Jesus praised peter & agreed. Infact, this was revealed to Peter by God.Jesus didn't have a standardized method of healing. Healed healed people with many different methods. Here he put spit-made mud on a mans eyes for the healing.Jesus preached against the teaching of the religious leaders of the day. He instead seemed to hint that he was the real source of bread(teaching) to the people (5000/4000 fed).People can predict the weather, but sometimes they can't see the reality of the spiritual climate around them.Jesus' comapssion drove him to miraculously feed 4000 people. He learned to keep his eyes on Jesus & of power over nature.Jesus told the crowds to go home, then went up on a mountain to pray by himself.Start with what you have, thank God, then let God multiply it. People were impressed by his wise teachings. He then claimed to be teaching under God's authority, with teachings direct from God.Jesus rebuked the disciples for thinking it a good idea to curse those who rejected them. They wanted to call a curse of consuming fire down upon them. That was not Jesus way. (the wild thing is that the disciples had the faith that Jesus had this in his power to do.Jesus went to the feast in private. People were murmuring about Jesus' aparent absence. Some belived him, some doubted him. All wanted to see some fireworks. But no one spoke out on the subject because the authorities had caused widespread fear regarding Jesus.Jesus was keeping distance between himself and those who were hoping to kill him. When the feast was drawing closer his brothers encouraged him to go join the festivities in Jerusalem since he had a public ministry. They encouraged the publicity, but did not really believe the validity of the ministry. Jesus said his time hadn't come yet. He said the world hated him since he preached against its' wickedness. He opted out of the first part of the festival (possible significance here in exacltly why he opted out of the early parts of the festival). When god forgives the millions of sin debts we have, it is an outrage to God that we would fail to forgive someone for a particular offense. God expects His forgiveness to be a pattern of example that we should follow. If someone sins against you, go first to them alone to make it right. If they favor their sin still, take 1 or 2 others with you (this also makes for an honest court case). If sin is still favored, get the whole church in on it. The person can be excommunicated. If you do what is right, don't worry, God is on your side.Jesus' purpose in coming to earth was to save the lost. He said this on the topic of weather it was right to eat with tax collectors & sinners. These people were his target market for salvation. (should they be ours too?)If you set a bad example for (or give temptation to) a kid & they stumble, it would better for you to drown yourself in the deep sea with a big rock tied to your neck."Be humble like a child to be great." Accepting/loving a child is doing the same for Jesus. Humility & low stature id the best stature in Heaven.Jesus fealt that he was not supposed to be eligible to pay temple taxes. He was in God's family, not God's slave subject. But, still he miraculously paid the taxes, to not offend. Note: this is different than tithes & offerings, and different from Roman taxes.Jesus healed a demon posession case that the disciples could not. This was reasoned by Christ to be in part because of the little faith of the disciples. Prayer (and fasting probably) are also factors.Matthew says that Jesus believed John the Baptist to be the fullfilment of the Elijah figure predicted in Malachi 4:5. But this is probably a typological fulfillment since Malachi's Elijah must come before massive destruction (as in Revelation). See Rev 11:6 for hints of Elijah being one of the 2 witnesses.Jesus started glowing bright. He talked with Moses & Elijah on the mountain. Peter, James & John saw it. This is marks Jesus as a special person. He outshined the best that the old testament had to offer. He doesn't have to sneak past the gatekeeper, like a theif. He doesn't have to trick the sheep, they know his voice. The sheep follow the voice of the sheep, but run from the voice of imposters. Jesus then said he was the door by which us sheep can come through to find pasture & be saved (pervious people were theives & robbers).Jesus told the pharisees who didn't accept that Jesus was who he claimed to be, that they could not follow him to heaven in death. They would instead "die in their sins." Here Jesus is preaching Heaven as exclusive (non-pluralistic).Jesus said he was the light of the world that guides men to life. Jesus claimed also that he was sufficiently backed by God the Father & his authority, thus the pharisees could not rebuke him. They sought to in fact arrest him, but "his time had not yet come."Jesus was teaching the next morning at the mount of olives. A woman caught in adultery was brought before Jesus. Moses law demanded that adulterers be stoned. Jesus drew in the sand (unsure what he drew or why exactly). Then he recommended that "those without sin can cast the first stone." This taught against hypocrisy (they all walked away without throwing a stone). Jesus then taught mercy by sending her away saying "go & sin no more."\0^m O N ^ " m a * ,<`)^<Ujv Parable to the host of the feast14:12-14see 215;;;;22((( S Parable of the guests14:7-11215!@HumilityA77+&& Man with dropsy healed14:2-6214@777+&& In a Pharisee's house on the Sabbath14:1222222,,, Pharisees warn Jesus about Herod13:31-35212c@CCC722((( How many will be saved?13:23-30)))))) Jesus travels toward Jerusalem13:22------&&& Jesus goes to Aenon near Salim10:40-42258@A@MMA50&&&& Jews confront Christ10:24-39&&&&& # Feast of Dedication in the temple10:22-25257@DDD83)))) Parables of mustard seed and leaven13:18-21555555+++ Synagogue official opposes Jesus13:14-17222222((( Woman healed on the Sabbath13:10-13208[@>>>2--### Parable of the fig tree(21:18-19)not a parable(11:12-14)not a parable13:6-9207@jjj^YYQ8 Fate of Galileans reported to Jesus13:1-5207@DDD833+++ Parable of Good/Wicked Servant24:45-5112:41-48297@@WWK?::00& Peter's question12:41 Parables about being ready12:16-40,,,,,,""" Jesus warns against greed12:13-15199@<<<0++!!! Then in your humility, you won't be humilated/degraded if someone more honored than you gets put in your spot. Take the most humble positions first, then you can be raised by the person in charge.Jesus healed this guy at will as an illustration to his teaching that this was a rescue of someone, not a violation of some rule against working on the sabbath.Jesus called Herod a "fox". Contrary to some specilation, this is not proved to be a "swear word". Jesus though did show obstination to the authority. He replied to the threat of Herod with stubborn determinatino to do what he had to do. Furthermore, Jesus here also seems to predict his death in Jerusalem with a slight connection to a "third day."Jesus went to were John the baptist was hanging out. Many of the JTB followers noticed that what John said about Jesus was true, that he did miracles, too. Many believed in Jesus there.Jesus was approached by some jews who asked him if he was the annointed one. He said I already told you but you didn't believe. My works speak for themselves that I am from God.Jesus miraculously straightened a back on the Sabbath. The church ruler condemned Jesus for "working" on the Sabbath (presumably because Jesus was known to be a healer by occupation). Jesus said that emergency rescues of animals(let alone healings of people) is not work. The ruler was put to shame. The crowd really enjoyed seeing miracles. The placement of this parable (where a man plants a fig tree, but it doesn't produce fruit, so it is eventually taken out of the soil) rides the tail in Luke to a conversation on the topic of death. So metaphorically, people are likely cut down if they are proven fuitless.Jesus was talking about various people who died in very extremely tragic ways. He said that horrible deaths were'nt necessarily the result of horrible sins. But he said that sins at all (if not repented from) will likewise cause bad death. LK 12:41 Peter asked, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?" 12:42 The Lord answered, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, `My master is taking a long time in coming,' and he then begins to beat the menservants and maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers. (47,48) With men, those who are unfaithful (who knew better) are punished more than one who didn't know better. Jesus claimed to be the expresion of the Kingdom, it seems: "the kingdom is in your midst."After the plot to arrest & kill Jesus was really public he seemed to distance himself from Jerusalem (though at other times during public knowledge of the threat of death, he seemed to go any way). After some unbelieving Jews were reported to the pharisees the resurection of Lazarus, Ciaphus the high priest said it is better that Jesus die than the all th people of the nation (by the Romans presumably). In fact, Ciaphus prophesied early that year that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one. 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.Jesus predicted that the sickness of lazarus would not end in death. After 2 days, he went to Judea against the concerns of his disciples. He said that daytime was more safe. He was convinced that he would be raizing the dead before he arrived "so that they would believe." Even though he knew lazarus would arise, he still wept in sorrow. We like a servant, after a hard day's work in the field, can't come in to relax & eat at the table. First, he must obey the master by preparing the master's meal. Then afterwards, the servant can eat. At the end of the day, the servant can only say he was just doing his job. He deserves no special thank-yous. Likewise, we are just servants of God. We should be humble, not demanding special rewards for our common duty.A rich man died & went to hell flames. A sick beggar man who begged at the rich man's house died & went to heaven. The rich man suffered in the flames & wanted a drink. He was told that this was an eternal impossibility, that no one goes from one place to the other. The rich man wanted to warn his living sons about hell. He was refused, because "they have the Bible. If they don't listen to the Bible, they wont listen to a resurrected person."The pharisees where lovers of money (possible causal relationship?). They did scoff at the comment of Jesus that one should serve God, not money. This was the story of a steward being over generous & canceling debts with the finances of his boss. He did this because he knew he was going to be fired from his job & he wanted the clients of his boss to treat him well after he was let go. He was desparate because in his desire to find another job. Jesus said that our generousity with money should be wild & crazy on earth to gain heavenly rewards. Jesus said many times Christians are more conservative at spending than the secular world. So, don't be afraid to spend for Heaven. This is a parable of a king who invites a certain townspeople to come to his wedding party. They ignored him & some even killed hose who brought the invitation message. (This was a message to the Jews, it seems, for they killed Jesus.) But the bigger message is that second string guests, nobodies, & random people were scooped up (anyone they could find to come). But someone wasn't properly dressed, so they got kicked out to torment & darkness. Basically, God invites even the scum of the earth to Heaven, but all must still be ready. But even if someone does this, it is up to God to decide (essentially saying that Jesus' kingdom is God's kingdom). With God, prominence is Heaven is determined by being the humble servant. Whoever is to be great must be the lowest slave of all.Diferent workers got hired at different times of the day. The workers who worked all day got paid the same as the one who worked one hour. All were paid the same. After the workers were complaining, the boss said that he broke no contracts, that he has the right to do what he wants with his money. So, Jesus said by this story that the last people will be the first & the first will be the last.It is hard for a rich man to co to heaven. Its easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. The disciple were surprised since they saw wealthy people as more blessed & loved by God(they asked who could be saved then?) Jesus replied that God can do the humanly impossibleWhat should a rich man do to go to heaven? Jesus said to obey all the commandments. He said he was perfect. Jesus knew better, & said that he needed to give uo the one error he had. He was not willing to part with his wealth. So, Jesus basically pointed him to the area in his life that was an idolatry to him. If you prioritize money or something above God, you are not prepared to give your life to God, trully.Jesus made time for, prayed for, layed his hands on for blessing, the kids. He rebuked his Disciples for trying to socially degrade or brush aside the kids.Jesus condemned divorce as never God's plan from the beginning. He defined Moses law on divorce as a patch for a bad idea, but that the ultimate solution & ultimate best is God's original design (genesis 1:27; 2:24).Humble(Lord I am a sinner), non-snobby prayers are what get heard. Don't say things like "thank-you that I am not like those other sinners & that I do such & such righteous things." Everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled & those that humble themselves will be exalted (see this phrase also at MT 23:12 Lk 14:11).Jesus encouraged persistence in prayer (always pray & never give up). God is better than a unjust judge who gives in to people's requests so that they will quit bugging him. God will vindicate "speedily." But When the son of man comes, will he find faith on the earth.Jesus said that in the days of the son of man(Jesus' revelation), there will be a very sudden & surprise destruction like Sodom or the Noatic flood (no time to go pack your bags, just run to the mountains). But God shortens the tribulation days for the sake of the elect. Don't believe Christ-pointers, or Chicken littles. The Coming will be as obvious to all as horizon-to-horizon lightning. Rather, we should be obedient in the end, even if we said no to the father at the beginning. When asked by the pharisees what/who gave Jesus the right/authority to do what he does, Jesus answered with a question. He asked whether John the baptist was from God. They were more concerned about the political ramamafications than with the truth. This was Jesus' point, so when they refused to answer, Jesus didn't answer them either. MT 21:14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple area, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they were indignant. MT 21:16 "Do you hear what these children are saying?" they asked him. "Yes," replied Jesus, "have you never read, " `From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise' ?"Jesus was angry at the temple casheers. They cheeted people out of money, when the people were trying to make sacrifices to God. Jesus flipped over the tables & spilled the money & drove the casheers away. He said that they turned God's house into a den of theives instead of having it be a house of prayer (as scripture commands).Jesus was hungry & walked by a fig tree with his disciples. A tree was there that had no fruit because it was out of season. Jesus cursed a fig tree for not having fruit. He said may you never bear fruit again. The next morning it was shriveled up. This was a metaphor for Israel. The fig tree was a symbol of the nation (even stamped on some Israeli coins, if memory serves). As Jesus approached Jerusalem (which means "city of peace"), "he wept over it (42) and said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes. Jesus said more of the pharisees, but it was to pronounce woe on them.Jesus knew that the common beleif was that the Christ/messiah was supposed to be decended/son of David. Jesus threw them for a loop when he sited Psalm 110:1 as grounds for questioning the common interpretation. The verse has David saying that "the Lord said to David's Lord. . " Jesus asked if a dad calls a son Lord. Thus, the messiah was to be more than a kingly-type figure decended from David. This was a real downer for them since they had their hopes set on a military-king-messiah-type guy beating up the Roman oppression. The most important commandment is to "love God with all your heart, soul, & mind (summary of commandments 1-4). Jesus rebuked them, saying that they didn't know the Scriptures or the power of God. Jesus said that there is no married people in heaven. Angels similarly do not get married. This was a sarcastic question for the sadducees, since they don't believe in the afterlife. Jesus then used Deut 6:4,5 as a proof text for the after life.Trying to trap Jesus, they wanted to ask Jesus a question. "Should they pay taxes?" He said to pay to Ceasar what is Ceasar's & to God what is God's. They were dumbfounded/amazed/silenced. (people back then were angered against the occupation/oppression of Israel by Rome. Jesus was not a political activist on taxes, but level-headed.Jesus told a story to portray himself as not just a servant of God, but a son of God. In the story, the son of the owner of the vineyard gets killed by the workers of the vineyard. At this point, this was a message to the pharisees that he knew they were trying to kill him. The owner in the story was said to come back to kill the workers & give the vineyard to others. Jesus quoted Psalm 118:22-23 with himself as the fulfillment of it. Afterwords, the chief priests & pharisees took the story personal, got angry & tried to arrest him.~LVAL f #o=_ JN 13:34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love JN 13:34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.Jesus was eager to eat the passover meal with his disciples before he suffered (again predicting his suffering). He said that it was the last time that he would celebrate this way until he gets to do it fully in heaven.Jesus loved his disciples. This was as he was about to wash their feet, knowing that he was about to die, knowing that he had been given everything from God. Love begets humble service even till the end (no senior-itis).Jesus in apparent clairvoyance, instructed Peter & John to go make preparations for their observance of the Passover celebration. Jesus predicted that the two would meet a guy carrying a pitcher of water. As they followed the water pitcher guy, he lead them to the house where it seemed that things were preplanned in a certain upstairs room of the house. Jesus had great connections (with God & man).Jesus told his disciples that he would be betrayed by one of them. Not only did this require clairvoyance, but it showed concern & involvement in his relationship with the rest of them.when some greeks sought Jesus to come at a feast, He took it as a sign, or a cue, to announce that his time of glorification is coming. This glorification he described as death.Even after the treat of death from the religious leadrers, Jesus was teaching everyday in the temple. Early in the morning they would come. Jesus' message had appeal, & he put in a lot of hours at it. This models hard work & the importance of following God's call despite the dangers. Also, the night time retirement spot(mount of olives) showed Jesus liked frequently to go camping. When Jesus comes in glory, he will bring the angels in for a time to judge the nations. He will set on his glorious throne separating bad people from good people(good to heaven/bad to hell). The good people are identified by their behaviors of charity (feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, giving drink to the thirsthy, helping the sick, visiting those in prison, being kind to strangers). But Jesus said all these acts of charity were done (or not done for him) personally. Even if you have done these things to the most insignificant poor soul (or little one), you are performing the task directly for Jesus.1. God has put us in charge of things according to our abilities. 2. God expects a return on His investment. 3. Those who earn a profit with the talents God gives us will be rewarded proportionately. 4. Those who were unfaithful servants in the story & did notreturn a profit were cast into outer darkness (mat.) or killed (luke).10 bridesmaids(God's Servants) were supposed to wait for the bridegroom (Jesus). 5 had brought oil for their lamps to last late into the night (in case the groom was late). 5 brought no oil. They asked to borrow some from the thoughtful 5, but they were denied since there wasn't enough to go around to everyone. So the 5 went to go get some from the store. While they were out, the groom came. After they made it late to the wedding party, they tried to get in, but the gaurds at the door didn't recognize them. So the lesson is watch & be ready.Jesus said we need to be ready for His return, since we don't know the day or hour of His arrival. (this was illustrated & emphasized by a parable of 5 smart girls & 5 dumb girls who needed to budget their lantern fuel to last till their master returns. Also illustrated in mark that we are like workers while the master is on vacation(entailing responsibility).)"+s}0 e 6 g 2 a a%s`g^. Some said "if you are the Christ, come down from there." This was another temptation to misuse his power, but in a time of torture the likes of which he had never experienced. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." 64 "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?" "He is worthy of death," they answered.Jesus remained silent before accusers that accused him of threatening to destroy the temple & rebuilding a new one in 3 days. This appears to be an easy thing to clear up. It show meekness to let history reveal the truth. Three days later his resurrection had built a temple in a way. Jesus provided a way to the holy of holies where God sits. Thus, you do not always have to sweat in self justification.Although the tone of Jesus' words is not known, He replied that his teachings have always been public. Jesus was saying that he taught so much all the time in the synagogue, surely there would be enough evidence had He been teaching bad doctrines. That was possibly the point. He wasn't teaching all these crazy things that Ciaphus was trying to use to create a false characterization. But then Jesus dropped the bomb of truth (see Mat. 26:64)Jesus said to Peter that Jesus could have called down 12 legions of angels. Jesus had the power, but yielded to the soldiers who escorted him to a torturous season of death.Jesus replied to Judas with "friend" & asked why he was coming. This was a currious thing since Jesus had sent him out with the words "what you must do, do quickly." Jesus could have responded mean, but he passively handed himself into custom. But there was something of power in the passive words, because it caused the guards to stagger backwards. He even healed the ear of one of those with the guards.Right before Jesus' arrest, He told is disciples to pack up a an extra bag (whereas before on a mission trip they were to not pack at all), and to pack up a sword. Jesus here was warning them of danger. Later, he chided Peter for using it. Why? Either he changed his mind, or he wanted the sword for a non violent, or non-offensivce thing. At least, Jesus was trying to rile them up at this point. They did not catch the seriousness of the situation. Because, later, they kept falling asleep at Gethsemene when they were supposed to be on guard duty & prayer patrol. With Peter as an example, it shows that strong zeal for something can flip-flop around to be zeal against. The best intentions of dedicated well-trained, & forewarned followers are worthless. People can crack under pressure. Therefore, let us work with sweat to solidify our loyalty to Jesus. Here Jesus predicts the night of his taking, & the reaction of his disciples. The reaction is derived from the principle of a verse " kill the shepherd, the sheep scatter. Its dangerous for group function when an authority figure owns more than authority, but also the bond-thread that ties all the groups' relationships to each other. Jesus endured this for us.Pilate tried to appease the crowd/priests/officers, by showing that Jesus had been humiliated & beaten. When they said to crucify him because he claimed to be the son of God, it freaked Pilate out. His wife had a dream the night before warning Pilate about how Jesus was good. He asked Jesus where he came from. Jesus didn't answer. Pilate said that he had the power to free or kill him. Jesus replied You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin." 12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, "If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar." Pilate replied "Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews. 15 But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered.Jesus endured the punching fists of the soldiers, the crown of thorns, the ripping off of his clothes for a mocking purple robe, the holding of a pretend scepter reed (which later they beat him on the head with), the warm spit of the soldiers, and the humilating racist slurs: "hail King of the Jews." Then they stripped the robe & put his clothes back on.Matthew said that Pilate knew that Jesus was on trial because the pharisees "envied" Jesus. This indicates that there was something public at the highest level of government that showed up as admirable (envy-worthy) about Jesus. Pilate washed his hands to show that he was innocent of this man's blood. The crowd said "his blood be on our own heads & the heads of our children." Pilate then gave Jesus over to be crucified.Jesus taught nothing to Herod. Herod had heard the rumors that Jesus could do miracles. Herod wanted to be entertained with a miracle. Jesus was simply silent as everyone (soldiers, religious leaders, officials & Herod) mocked & accused him.33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?". . . . . . 36 Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place." 37 "You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me." 38 "What is truth?" Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, "I find no basis for a charge against him..v*) a ^ Q O p oJlr2n+|)w>p Peter and John go home24:1220:10,,,,,% 3 Peter and John inspect the empty tomb24:1220:3-9<<<<<4--- 3 Women run to tell disciples28:816:824:9-1120:2>>>>>8/)# ? "The women were going to the tomb to bring spices. They apparently had no expectation of a ressurection. Neither did the disciples since they didn't really believe the testimony of the ladies after they came back. As it is according to the gospels, there is no visible room for a disciple-lead body-stealing partyMatthew said that Chief priests and Pharisees knew rumor was out (started from the mouth of Jesus) that Jesus might "rise again in three days." They explained to Pilate how the disciples might try to steal Jesus' body. So, soldiers were placed at the tomb to secure it.Joseph of Arimathea was a member of the ruling council. It says something of Jesus that Joseph (& Nicodemus) was a follower of Jesus. Joseph put Jesus' body in his own tomb.Jesus side was pierced to prove that He was dead, so that he wouldn't need to have his legs broken. They wanted to break the legs to speed death so that there wouldn't be dead dead bodies hanging around on the holy day. Jesus thus was definitely dead. In this manner of death, it fullfilled 2 scriptures: not a bone broken. . . (Psalm 34:20) They will look on the one they have pierced (Zech 12:10). MT 27:51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. 52 The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people. MT 27:54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of God! (Luke said innocent.")"Also before dying, Jesus said "it is finished." (It is believed that Jesus was refering to his work of bearing the punnishment for the sins of mankind.) Then Jesus yielded his spirit/breathed his last.He cried out loudly. One of the things e said right before dying was "Father into thy hands I commit my spirit." (So, apparently he didn't believe God had totally given up on him/forsaken him.Jesus said "I thirst." So they gave him a sponge soaked in vinegar. John said this was a fulfillment of Scripture (Psalm 69:21).Jesus cried out "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" This was a quote from Psalm 22. It is believed that this was the climax of when the sins of mankind's sin was placed on Christ's back; that God turned his head away from Jesus. As Jesus died at dusk, the curtain was split; the curtain in the temple that separated God's most holy place from the place where common priests were. (This symbolically was God saying there is now direct & open access to God.)The thief said to Jesus "remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus said "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise." This indicates that Jesus knew he was going to die & go to paradise. Granting (or at least acknowledging) salvation was indication of the concentration of spirit & mind that Jesus had while on the cross. "About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see." 25 He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. 28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" 33 They got up a LVAL nd returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, "It is true! The substance of the quotation is recorded by all four Gospels in their account of the Triumphal Entry; but the words are said, not by the Jerusalemites, but by Jesus' supporters. One example was their teaching that it was ok to pay money to God for the amount of honor that you were going to give your parents for the rest of your life. Thus the 5th commandment.Giving alms of righteousness are a better way of being clean. When a demon has been cast out of someone, if the person doesn't do a good job putting God in their life, the demon will try to find seven other demons more evil than himself to come back to his original host person.Jesus said that the eyes& ears of those who see & hear the things of Jesus (people like his disciples), are more lucky than many kings, prophets, & righteous people before who longed to see & hear, but didn't get to.Jesus claimed to have all things(special revelation of God). That he knows the Father like no other (except those to whom Jesus chooses to reveal the father). After the mission trip, the disciples were exited about the miracles they did. They cast out demons, etc. Jesus affirmed them that "He saw satan fall like lightening, nothing can hurt you, but get more excited that you are going to heaven than your authority over demons."When taking a mission trip for Jesus, don't take a suitcase, extra shoes, or money. Which is essentially saying "always forgive when someone repents."Where 2 brothers or sisters agree on earth about anything they ask, God will answer the prayer (assuming his will). Where 2 or 3 people are gathered together righteously for Jesus, Jesus is there in the middle of the group. If a brother in Christ sins against you, rebuke him. If he repents, forgive him. If they do not repent, feel free to stand in opposition to them, God will stand with you(assuming you are right). There is more joy in heaven, in fact a party, when one sinner repents (is found) when the shepperd brings them in on his shoulders, than over the 99 that were just fine all along. God doesn't want anyone to die being lost.Jesus asked about a shepherd who leaves the 99 in a flock to go find a lost sheep. This he recommended as worth it. Someone who can't bear the teachings of Jesus is a follower of the devil, since Jesus came from God. The devil is into murder, & not into the truth. In fact, Satan is the father of lies. Jesus asked the croud to examine him to find sin then he said that the reason they don't hear God in Jesus' teachings is because they weren't from God."If you hold to my teaching, . . . .Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. . . from sin(vs34)."Jesus claimed to be flawless. The pharisees thought the officers were just as stupid as the croud, since they didn't know the scriptures well. The pharisees knoew of no scripture that predicted a prophet coming out of Galilee. This they said to Nicodemous when he recommended hearing Jesus out in a fair examination. The pharisees wanted to make it look like all the authorities & theologians rejected Jesus, But in fact Nicodemus was at least a jesus sympathizer (here & John 3).Jesus stood up during a climactic point in the festival to announce that he was the thirst quencher. At this the Jews tried to stone Jesus (again). Jesus asked which miracle they were stoning him for. They replied that they were stoning him because he claimed to be God. Instead of being apologetic in denial of the divine claim, He gave rationale that the claim is scriptural at least in a poetic sense (see Psalm 82:6).Jesus said: No one who leaves kids, parents, or siblings will fail to receive a hundred fold blessing (including eternal life), if they do so to follow Jesus. The disciples who "followed him" were promised each a throne in heaven to help sit on judging the 12 tribes of Israel. Eating & drinking is part of the deal (heavenly party)Jesus' disciples were shocked at Jesus' teaching on divorce so much that they kind of praised celebacy. Jesus replied that not everybody has that gift(can receive it), but that celebacy is fine for those who accept it.Jesus taught that divorce within the confines of the law is still possibly illicit in God's eyes. That if a divorce happens outside of marital unfaithfulness (under a poor excuse of the divorce at least) the man & woman involved are still guilty of adultery even after a new marriage to someone else.Jesus said that he was going to lay down his life for the sheep & take it back up again. In fact, this was in Jesus' power to do as something that was given by God as a responsibility.Jesus concluded that since there was this special shepherding care that he gives the sheep & even dies for them, the Father loves him for it.I am the Good Shepherd, I lay down my life for the sheep, I own the sheep more than a hired worker who cares more about the pay than the sheep. This is refered to as the fullfilment of daniel (perhaps Dan 9:27, 11:31, 12:11) (Luke puts it this way: armies surrounding Jerulsalem.) At this point, Jesus describes the situation as being so urgent that you should run away to hide in the mountans. You don't have time to go pack your bags & for sure to wait till you give birth to a baby. This turmoil & tribulation is said by Jesus to be the worst since the creation of everything. No human would survive unless the days of tribulation are cut short (which God plans to do for the sake of the chosen ones). (Luke says: This is when Jerusalem gets captured by sword & scatered aruound the world by the Gentiles, until the time of the Gentiles is completed. When the disciples asked Jesus about the end times, He mentioned second that there would be international battles for power. There would be famines, earthquakes, pestilence, terrors & great signs from heaven. These things are the beginings of the birthpains for the end.Jesus called the religious hypocrites of his day snakes, hypocrites, white painted tombs with death inside, wicked, brood of vipers, hell bound, prohet killers/beaters/persecutors.Jesus said that tithing your money is to be done, but without forgetting justice/mercy/faith.Jesus pronounced woe to the pharisees for shutting the doors of heaven on people's noses, for not entering heaven themselves, for traveling far & wide to make a convert, but then turning them to twice the son of hell as they are, for disallowing peope to swear by the temple, but allowing people to swear by the gold in the temple(which is made holy by the temple itself), for tithing on small possessions, but neglecting justice/mercy/ faith, for cleaning the outside of things, but leaving the inside wicked, for large scale hypocrisy & iniquity. Jesus said that the pharisees would receive the "greater condemnation." In fact, Jesus said that they were guilty for sheding all the innocent blood of all the phrophets since the beginning of time.Whoever exalts himself (in context, like the pharisees do hypocritically) will be humbled. Whoever humbles himself will be exalted. The Pharisees were discouraged by seeing the crowd praise Jesus & asked him to make them stop. Jesus said that if the crowd stopped, the rocks would start to cry out in praise. If Jesus wasn't who he claimed to be, this would be very arrogant & blasphemous. The Pharisees just about gave up their fight against Jesus after seeing how the cowds praised him. JN 11:41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him. You cursed; into eternal punishment prepared for the devil & his angels!"As it was in the days of Noah(with the flood) or Lot(with Sodom destroyed), the destruction will come as a surprise to many. Life will be normal as people are eating/drinking/participating in marriage/buying/selling/planting/building. Here the destruction is metaphorically the "coming/revealing of the Son of Man." Whoever seeks to save their life by running away, will lose it since there won't be time (so lose your life to preserve it). In fact, whether in bed/field/mill, one person will be taken, another at the same place will be left. The point here is that it will be surprising, so be ready.Be ready fir Christ's return by doing the following: don't let your heart be wieghed down with dissipation/drunkenness/cares for this world, do watch at all times, praying that you will have the strength to escape all these things that will take place against all who live on the face of the earth, and be ready so you can stand before the Son of Man (Jesus).Heaven & earth will pass away, but my (Jesus speaking) words will not pass away.Jesus said: "this generation shall not pass away til all these things shall take place." (Though this has been taken to imply the Jewish race will not pass away till these things take place. But perhaps Jesus is saying the fullness of the end times cannot happen till the events in verses 4-14 & some general things that Jesus was mentioning do take placel within a generation. Or simply, much of this stuff (& the full spirit of the start of the end times) is going to happen in your life time. There will be a sense that you can tell that the coming of Jesus is near. Similar to sensing the proximity of summer by looking at a fig tree. (no man will know the hour though 25:13; & with some surprise 24:44; 24:36)After the days of tribulation, everything will go dark (the sun, moon & stars). The powers of heaven will be shaken (possibly tremors in the spiritual realm). At that point, the Son of man will be revealed with redemption. The tribes of the earth will mourn, while the elect will be gathered from around the earth.Tricky false Christs & false prophets will come to deceive in the end times. Jesus is predicting all over the place here & more as the end of his life approaches. In refering to his soon coming capture & crucifixion, Jesus said that this was his time for being glorified & that it would glorify God. This would essentially cause a cascade of glory all around, both directions. The juice/wine was to resemble Jesus' blood as a new covenant; a covenant of forgiveness for sins of the world. The bread was his body which was given to us. Corinthians 11 says to remember this about Jesus "everytime you do it."Jesus said that he wanted his disciples to eat the bread & drink the fruit of the fine "in remembrance of him." This had huge impolications as it was a re-interpretation of some of the meaning (a kind of fulfillment) of the passover meal.Jesus was washing the feet of his disciples despite 3 key things. 1. Peter was trying to opt out (Jesus made it mandatory for service to him) 2. Jesus said that this isn't a ritual that is purposed to impart a special, spiritual cleansing onto somone (otherwise the idea of a bath would have been perhaps an option & Peter wasn't needing a full bath & feet washing is inconsequencial to whether or not you are claen on the inside either). 3 Jesus washed the feet of Judas knowing fully that Judas was "not clean" & Satan influenced.Jesus washed his disciples feet. He took off his outer, dressy clothing. He took out a basin & a towel. This was an extreme example of humiliation/humility for Jesus to perform such a dirty job; the job of a slave. Jesus' leadership; his love, his example, his near-farewell message, his divine expression, was to wash feet.JN 12:47 "As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. 49 For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say. JN 12:44 Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. 45 When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me.Refering to his soon crucifixion, Jesus said, "31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. 32 But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die. 34 The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, `The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this `Son of Man'?" 35 Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. 36 Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.SLVAL ; mJesus' clarvoyance about the nature of his soon coming death was intended to insight belief in the disciples. In Jesus' leaving, he said that satan will come (assuming to mean during the killing of Christ). But indeed, Satan would have "no power of him(Christ would rise)." All Christ's (work on the cross) was merely in response to what God had commanded.(28 "You heard me say, `I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.) Going to the Father is Good for Jesus, he will presumedly be blessed. Jesus here did not claim that the father & he were equal in the intended sense. Jesus admitted some type of subbordination. This is undoubtedly tied to the human part of Jesus as less than the Father's divine entity. Otherwise, there is no context for futher elucidation as to how Jesus is lesser than the Father.27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. If you lovge Jesus you will keep his commandments. And Jesus will send the spirit of truth (the counselor/comforter). This is all part of a together-ness that will remain, even as Jesus goes away. The tri-une God is present with those who are obedient. They will trade love with God & Jesus will manifest himself to them. This manifestation will teach you all things, reminding you (disciples) of Jesus' words.JN 14:8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember the words I spoke to you: `No servant is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: `They hated me without reason.'"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other. We don't understand what he is saying." 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, `In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, `Where are you going?' 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. He simply ate breakfast with them. It seems that there wasn't a lot of conversation here. Words were not needed to convey that Jesus was the risen victor Son of God. Yet, He cared to just hang out for breakfast with his friends.Jesus was whipped/scourged/flogged. Isaiah 53:3-5 says: 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him and then release him. " (The injustice hereis unmistakable. They crucified an innocent man. Jesus proved endurance in mistreatment.)9:6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!" But Pilate answered, "You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him." 7 The Jews insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God." 8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9 and he went back inside the palace. "Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10 "Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?" 11 Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin." 12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, "If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar." 13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour. "Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews. 15 But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered. 16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.K z3J !
